Restrictions to visit Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a magical place with impressive architecture. It is one of the 7 wonders of the world most visited by tourists. Therefore, the Peruvian State is committed, through international policies and agreements, to protect all this cultural heritage.

Prohibited items in Machu Picchu

These rules apply to all visits to Machu Picchu, whether you are coming from an Inca Trail, a Salkantay Trek, an Inca Jungle or have booked a visit to the Classic Inca Sanctuary.

  • Any type of poster, banner, label, etc. either for the purpose of propaganda or political activism or for any other purpose aimed at preventing confrontations or disturbances.
  • Knives and similar weapons (sharp). These are prohibited items for obvious reasons.
  • Cigarettes of all kinds (including electronic cigarettes). They create air pollution and waste.
  • Umbrellas, parasols and the like take up a lot of space and their spikes can damage the ground and/or archaeological remains. Wear a hat and sunglasses when the weather is good and a raincoat when it rains or rains.
  • Tripods, lecterns, banners and others, since they are objects that can damage the archaeological site or be used violently.
  • Objects are also prohibited in the citadel of Machu Picchu: paragliders, drones or other flying machines. Visiting the citadel in any commercial form requires special authorization from the tourist authorities.
  • Use wands that do not have the proper rubber tips. Even for the elderly or disabled, any type of rod should have a special rubber tip to prevent soil damage and erosion.
  • Entry for backpacks larger than 40 x 35 x 20 cm. Otherwise, they must be kept in the payment lockers.
  • Entry into our country of any type of alcoholic beverages or illicit substances.

  • All kinds of paints, aerosols, colored sprays , etc. Doing graffiti that damages the historical heritage of the Cusco region is a crime punishable by our laws.
  • In Machu Picchu, any type of audio equipment (speakers, musical instruments, audio equipment, etc.), as well as any type of source of noise pollution, is prohibited.
  • Entrance of walkers while damaging the grounds of the citadel of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, they can use feeders (also called kangaroos, etc.).
  • High-heeled shoes or shoes whose soles can erode the area. We recommend the use of soft-soled tennis shoes or trekking shoes.

Buy a tourist ticket from Cusco?

Shop at COSITUC

Buy your tickets upon arrival in Cusco at the COSITUC office (Committee of Integrated Services of Cultural Tourism – Cusco). This organization is in charge of managing the Cusco tourist ticket.

Hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Shop at the attractions

It is important to know that you can also buy the tourist ticket in the places you will visit and that they are included in each of the tickets. You can buy the tourist ticket, for example, at the archaeological center of Pisac, more precisely at the entrance. You can buy the tourist ticket in the indicated places, with the exception of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Monument to Pachacutec.

Remember that even if you only want to visit one of the attractions included in the tourist ticket, you still have to pay the full ticket since you cannot pay for each attraction individually.
