Maras Moray and Salineras Tour Overview

On this half-day tour, we will visit the agricultural laboratory at Moray and the salt mines at Maras. These are two special places in the Sacred Valley and even the trip from Cusco offers spectacular views of incredible landscapes.

The experience of the Salineras of Maras and Moray half day gives us the opportunity to know 2 very important places: The circular terraces of Moray and the natural salt flats of Maras.

Both places played an important role during the time of the Incas, Moray fulfilled the function of acclimatization of seeds for distribution in the different altitudinal levels and the salt of Maras served as a form of trade.

This experience is designed for all ages and can be done individually to meet new people, as a couple or with friends to share emotions and also as a family to live an unforgettable adventure.

This tour will take you to the natural salt mines of Salineras, through ancient colonial villages that are located in the Sacred Valley and surrounded by high snow-capped mountains. First we will head to Chinchero, where we will see an exhibition of natural and traditional textile production. We will continue to the town of Maras, known for its colonial style houses and interesting churches. From Maras we head to Moray, one of the most interesting Inca constructions, which is believed to have been an agricultural experimentation station. Then we will head to Salineras, where the famous salt mines are located. Finally, the bus will take you back to Cusco. As you can see, this excursion has it all: natural beauty, cultural sites and impressive salt flats, don’t miss the opportunity to take this trip!

Itinerary Maras Moray and Salineras Tour

Day 1: Cusco - Maras - Moray

We will pick you up from your hotel around 8 AM and head to Moray. The drive is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and is truly beautiful. You will see the peaks of the Andes, through lush yellow wheat fields, and past some villages. Finally you will arrive at the fascinating display of terraces in Moray.  This sector features three amphitheater-like terraces made by the Incas. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth in the shape of a bowl, are thought to be used to determine the optimum conditions for cultivation.

When you have finished the tour in Moray, you will head to the salt pans of Maras, which are about 2 kilometers away. This town is known as an ancient salt production center that dates all the way back to colonial times. There are over 3000 salt wells carved into the side of the mountain, being filled daily by a small stream of water. The area is incredibly beautiful.

Then we head back – but the tour is not over yet! On the way back to Cusco we will stop at Lake Huaypo – this stunning lake is a great place to take photos! You will also see spectacular wildlife and have the opportunity to visit one of the local communities where many of the Inca Trail porters live.

After the excursion you will return to Cusco in time to enjoy your own lunch.

Travel Guide

The salt mines of Maras
The salt mines of Maras offer one of the most beautiful natural spectacles of the Sacred Valley.

If you know Pamukkale in Turkey, you will see that it has something very similar, but it is much bigger!

These salt pans have been used since Inca times to extract salt with an evaporation process, from a natural source of very salty water.

Today there are more than 3000 water wells exploited by 800 families from local communities.

Access to the salt pans is limited so as not to damage them, but you can take fantastic pictures!

Visit Maras with a local community

Medialuna is a community that has developed community-based tourism activities to share their traditions with travelers.

They organize day or half day tours, presenting for example chicha, traditional textiles, medicinal plants and their guinea pigs.

Maras

The town of Maras will be our first point of visit, which was of great importance during the Viceroyalty, declared Villa de San Francisco de Asis (it was the main supplier of salt in the southern highlands), as evidenced by the church and the houses that still retain the coats of arms of indigenous nobility on their facades.

Salt mines of Maras

The salt mines of Maras our second point of visit belongs to the town of Maras, which was of great importance during the Viceroyalty, was the main supplier of salt of the southern highlands, as evidenced by the church and the houses that still retain the coats of arms of indigenous nobility in their facades.
The salt mines of Maras surprise the visitor with more than three thousand wells that are still being worked by more than 360 families, who have inherited this custom and artisan extractive work; the commercialization of salt is in charge of the Maras Sal association, in charge of watching over the interests of the community since the end of the 80s.

Moray

Best Tour I've ever had! Américo gave us the best tour we could ask for.We were 6 peoples, went por 10 days. He made so interesting every place we went with all the history and knowledge that he shared, so it felt different and special his treatment instead of just going, take the picture and go. Also, the experience in the Salkantay trail it was magical and authentic as if we were the Andean man. I was a little bit worried for my 9 y/o son because the route is of high difficulty, but Américo and his crew were very helpful that made it very easy and pleasent for my kid, they answered all his questions and took cared of his needs.
The food was delicious every day of the tour and made by a private chef just for us. In short the crew made sure to cover all our needs.
The whole experience made me fell in love of Peru and its culture. Everyone in my family was please and happy for the amount of details and care.

I would definitely repeat this tour. It exceed my expectations. I hope i can come back and hire KuskAndes Treck for another tour.

Machu Picchu alternative trek - Inka experience Americo went above and beyond to make our experience in Machu Picchu unforgettable! We arrived to Cusco in the middle of the strikes closing the main roads and whilst many tourists ended up trapped, Americo organised an alternative route to make our trip possible. Highly recommend him!

Trek to Machu Picchu Two summers ago my two girlfriends and I did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was simply the most magical experience of my life. This trek is not easy and the altitude is no joke. However, the accomplished feeling you receive when you finally catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu is unmatched and totally worth every mile climbed. We complete our trek with Terrias Vivas, and had some issues. But our guide, Americo, became like a best friend to us (it was only the three of us and the guide for our trip). I was so happy to hear that he recently opened his own trekking company because he is amazing! He is SO intelligent and can identify nearly every single flower, plant, bird, etc. that he sees. He has such a kind heart and I wish that everyone hiking the Andes had the opportunity to have him as their guide.
In conclusion, this tour is definitely worth it. Again, Americo is incredible and I walked away with not only photos of incredible views, increased knowledge of culture and history, and full bellies but I also gained a great friend in the process!
