Waqrapucara Trek 1 Day Tour Overview

The archaeological site of Waqrapukara is located in the district of Acos , in the province of Acomayo, in the department of Cusco. Strategically located between the Apurímac valley and the Pomacanchi plateau, it is a cultural landscape with cognitive elements of wisdom and power, where two promontories rise, with a camouflaged architecture of carved stones.

Adapted to the monument, walled with semicircular surrounding walls, with stairs, trapezoidal windows and niches, palisades, accesses to small rooms, central square facing east with trapezoidal constructions with single, double and triple jambs, also in stone for ceremonies or «waka» and a «machay» or cave; All these elements are found at the foot of rocky outcrops whose architectural features suggest that this space was ceremonial and sacred and probably had other functions for the time.

This archaeological complex is called Waqrapukara. According to researcher Dr. Víctor Angles Vargas, it derives etymologically from two words: waqra means horn and the word pukara means fortress or barracks. In summary, this word Waqrapukara means horn-shaped fortress. It was the residence of the nobility of this place; with astronomical observatories and at the same time a protected religious center with watchtowers and underground.

WAQRAPUKARA TOUR: CUSCO – ACOMAYO – WAQRAPUKARA – CUSCO

We start our journey to Waqrapukara by car and leave Cusco around 4:00 am with our private transport. We drive along an asphalted road in the southern valley of Cusco towards the district called Acomayo. Along the way we will cross the impressive Pomacanchis lagoon and several picturesque towns until we reach the Huascar intersection where the paved road ends and the adventure begins. We continue on an asphalted dirt road until we reach Huayqui (also spelled Wayki or Wayqui ), the starting point of our Waqrapukara trek.

Before starting the trip to Waqrapukara, we will share breakfast with a local family. So it’s time to go! The first part of our trek takes us to Suythuwanca , which will take about an hour and a half. From there you continue to climb for another hour and a half along a winding road lined with mountains. The views here are out of this world! In addition to these impressive views, we will delight in fascinating ancient cave paintings along the way. Some of these cave paintings are in excellent condition.

Finally we arrive at Waqrapukara (4300 m). We rest and enjoy a picnic before starting our guided tour of this mysterious Inca fortress. In Quechua, Waqrapukara actually means «horn fortress», from the words waqra («horn») and pukara («fortress»), and is a sight to behold. It is the horn-shaped rock formations that probably give the Inca fortress its name.

Waqrapukara is an impressive archaeological structure high on a mountain and surrounded by beautiful lush landscapes. We have about an hour to explore this fascinating site. The signs direct us to the different areas of the site, which actually includes several structures.

When we get tired of Inca history and interesting ruins, we will return the same way. As we walk another 2 hours to the starting point, we have one last chance to admire the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Finally we arrive in Paltacancha where our vehicle is waiting for us to take us back to Cusco around 19:00

And above all it brings the best adventurous spirit and always brings out the best smile in front of the wonders that the majestic ravines of Apurimac offer us.

Frequently Asked Questions Waqrapucara Trek 1 Day Tour

What is Waqrapukara?

It is a fortress of pre-Inca and Inca construction. In pre-Inca times it was a small citadel, hence the name «Llaqta Pukara», where the chief Qanchi and his family lived. It also served as an astronomical observatory and had a sanctuary dedicated to the god Teqci Pachakamaq Wiraqocha.

Who built Waqrapukara?

First, it was built by the Qanchi ethnic group during the Auqaruna period, between 1500 and 1000 BC. The current construction is from the Inca period, it was built during the time of the Inca Wayna Qhapaq, with the intervention of the architects of this government, also intervened Qanchimachu and Ttito Q’osñipa.

Why did they turn it into a fortress?

Because already in the time of the Auqaruna, it was necessary to form men and warrior places to defend the conquered territory of the ethnic group and tribe. Not only to defend their territory and their chief. In pre-Inca and Inca times, these chiefs were called curacas, and in colonial times they were called caciques. In Purunruna’s time, there was no need for pucaras, since they lived wherever they wanted.

What was the god of the Q’anchis in the pre-Inca period?

The Q’anchis believed that there was a Creator of all created things, whom they called Teqci Wiraqocha. «Worshipping the sun, they must have taken them from the Incas». (Pedro Cieza, Chronicles of Peru) One day a tall man named Conti Wiraqocha Pachayachacheq came to San Pedro de Cacha and taught them about the Creator God; the men of Canas, who occupied Cacha, wanted to kill him, but fire came down from heaven and they were afraid and fled from the place. In memory of this fact, they built a temple in Raqchi (Juan de Betanzos, Narración de los Incas, 1551).

What are the characteristics of the sanctuary or Waca of Waqrapukara?

It has a triple jamb door, which means that it is very sacred. On the other hand, the deities created by man, such as the god of the sun, the moon, the stars and others, have their sanctuaries with double jamb covers. The chronicler Santa Cruz calls the Tecsi Pachakamaq Wiraqocha, the invisible god. This deity was accepted by the Incas, so they also built a temple or shrine in the city of Cusco, in the place of the cathedral (Chronicler Juan Santa Cruz Pachacuti).

What are the reasons why the Q’anchis did not want to obey the Inca Wayna Qhapaq?
Because of the enmity that they maintained after the battle in the pampas of Cangallo (Checacupe) and Combapata. In this battle the Q’anchis lost to the Inka army commanded by the Inca Wiraqocha. The other reason was the collection of tribute in products, silver objects and military mita that they had to pay to the Inca government. During the Wayna Qhapaq period, the curaca Ttito Q’osñipa was present in the Pomacanchi area (Fredy Caballero).

What measures did the Inka Wayna Qhapaq take before the rebellion of the Ttito Q’osñipa?

Wayna Qhapaq sends an army to repress the Qanchi army led by the Ttito Q’osñipa curaca. The Qanchi chief moved towards the city of Cusco, to add more soldiers and to extend his territory towards the territory dominated by the Incas. The encounter took place in the pampas of Phiñaypampa, near Corma; in this battle, the army of Ttito Q’osñipa lost, taking prisoner a group of Q’anchi soldiers…. (Dr. Vargas)

What happened to Ttito Q’osñipa after the battle of Phiñaypampa?

Ttito Q’osñipa returned to the Waqrapukara fortress and resisted the Inca army for about a month. When deprived of water, the Q’anchis surrendered and were taken prisoners to Cusco, more than one hundred Q’anchis with the curaca Qanchi. In Cusco, the sentence would have been death for the rebels; but Wayna Qhapaq, pardoning them, simply had the Q’anchis’ ears cut off as a sign of rebellion. He advised them to change their behavior. Before the cutting, he made them dance the tusuy of the Qanchi….. (Dr. Vargas).

What was the result of the conquest of the north of the empire with Ttito Q’osñipa?

Wayna Qhapaq, with his thousands of soldiers, went to the Ecuadorian territory, was defeated and conquered many ethnic groups in the north, the most important of which was the Cañari ethnic group. They returned with endowments of war and Cañari prisoners, some of whom were in the site of Picchu in the city of Cusco and others were taken to the territory of the Qanchi curaca, where there was already an Inca general, to whom the Inca gave him a woman similar to an ajlle.

Best Tour I've ever had! Américo gave us the best tour we could ask for.We were 6 peoples, went por 10 days. He made so interesting every place we went with all the history and knowledge that he shared, so it felt different and special his treatment instead of just going, take the picture and go. Also, the experience in the Salkantay trail it was magical and authentic as if we were the Andean man. I was a little bit worried for my 9 y/o son because the route is of high difficulty, but Américo and his crew were very helpful that made it very easy and pleasent for my kid, they answered all his questions and took cared of his needs.
The food was delicious every day of the tour and made by a private chef just for us. In short the crew made sure to cover all our needs.
The whole experience made me fell in love of Peru and its culture. Everyone in my family was please and happy for the amount of details and care.

I would definitely repeat this tour. It exceed my expectations. I hope i can come back and hire KuskAndes Treck for another tour.

Machu Picchu alternative trek - Inka experience Americo went above and beyond to make our experience in Machu Picchu unforgettable! We arrived to Cusco in the middle of the strikes closing the main roads and whilst many tourists ended up trapped, Americo organised an alternative route to make our trip possible. Highly recommend him!

Trek to Machu Picchu Two summers ago my two girlfriends and I did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was simply the most magical experience of my life. This trek is not easy and the altitude is no joke. However, the accomplished feeling you receive when you finally catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu is unmatched and totally worth every mile climbed. We complete our trek with Terrias Vivas, and had some issues. But our guide, Americo, became like a best friend to us (it was only the three of us and the guide for our trip). I was so happy to hear that he recently opened his own trekking company because he is amazing! He is SO intelligent and can identify nearly every single flower, plant, bird, etc. that he sees. He has such a kind heart and I wish that everyone hiking the Andes had the opportunity to have him as their guide.
In conclusion, this tour is definitely worth it. Again, Americo is incredible and I walked away with not only photos of incredible views, increased knowledge of culture and history, and full bellies but I also gained a great friend in the process!
