The entrance control to Machu Picchu is open from 06:00 to 17:00. We will hike to Machupicchu (bus ride is optional for $ 12.00) and enter the hidden royal citadel of the Incas. Here we have a 2 hour guided tour of this wonderful ancient city to visit temples, terraces, palaces, priests’ houses, sundial, industrial sector and agricultural fields.

Marvel at the technical ingenuity of the Incas, so ahead of their time and still a bit of a mystery today! Without having modern tools and not even steel and iron, the people who built this city were resourceful in organizing this community in a sustainable and beautiful way on the mountainside, also bringing water into the canals through the streets so that people used it.

When a Peruvian guide showed Hiram Bingham this site, it was almost unrecognizable, covered in dense vegetation and in a state of neglect. It has since been cleaned and restored and is now protected and loved around the world!

After this tour, you can climb Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu (be sure to book your tickets in advance!). Each mountain takes about 3 hours to climb and descend.

Another low-impact option that doesn’t require an additional ticket is the trek to Porta del Sole, the main entrance to the Inca Trail (it takes about 2-2.5 hours round trip). Another option is an excursion to the Inca Bridge.

You can stop and enjoy this magical city for more than 7 hours before returning to Aguas Calientes at 6:20 pm (subject to availability) to take the train to Ollantaytambo. A private bus will pick up our group and drop them off at their hotel in Cusco around 9:30 PM Rest your feet and body now, but we can assure you that your heart will recover for weeks and years to come!

Travel Guide

The excursions and the Lares Trek begin with a hike on the day scheduled for the Inca Trail program. Please note that the actual program may vary slightly depending on the time of year when it is milder.

During the day, the trails connect with occasional small villages on the Lares Valley hiking trails. Therefore, this hike should be considered to have much more interaction with the direct descendants of the Incas than the traditional Inca Trail. Past and present intermingle here along the Inca trails. Traditional life has changed little since Inca times and the highlanders retain some Inca customs. There are spectacular and beautiful places to see and people to meet. This hike will be an unforgettable experience.

On the day of departure to the town of Ollantaytambo, you will pass through the town of Calca and have lunch in a good restaurant, after which you will begin to get organized to hike the Inca Trail. In this small town you will meet our local team of llamas, alpacas, horses, shepherds and horsemen who will help you pack for the trek. Our guide is also an excellent cook and takes care of us throughout the trip.

The next day we travel to the Kiswarani pass, at about 4,400 m, where the flora consists of grasses and puna plants, all supported by the higher lakes in the upper zone. After reaching the pass and enjoying the beautiful views, we descend to where we set up our Kunkani rest camp in the local village, which consists mainly of traditional mud huts with thatched roofs. The next day we climb up to the Kunkani pass, then continue to the Ipsayqocha pass at about 4500 meters, which we then descend to our second camp which has the same name of the Tierras Vivas.

Descending the next day, our destination Patacancha passed through the different microclimates of the place, suddenly realizing how different it was every hour. During the trek we will have crossed three or four passes, traversing the high «Pradera» of the Puna, then descending into the jungle, and finally, into the warm and lush Urubamba Valley. If we are lucky, we will have the opportunity to see and observe wild foxes, chinchillas, eagles and perhaps the flight of condors. From our destination Paseo Patacancha, we have the last lunch prepared by our cook and return to Ollantaytambo to take the train to Aguas Calientes. The distance is 2 hours. We are looking forward to a good shower and a good sleep after the physical effort of this incredible hike. On the last morning we get up early, have breakfast, and then take a 20 minute bus ride to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, the «Wonder of the World», ending with a 2 hour guided tour, and then plenty of free time to explore the citadel of Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco by expedition or Vistadome train.

Best Tour I've ever had! Américo gave us the best tour we could ask for.We were 6 peoples, went por 10 days. He made so interesting every place we went with all the history and knowledge that he shared, so it felt different and special his treatment instead of just going, take the picture and go. Also, the experience in the Salkantay trail it was magical and authentic as if we were the Andean man. I was a little bit worried for my 9 y/o son because the route is of high difficulty, but Américo and his crew were very helpful that made it very easy and pleasent for my kid, they answered all his questions and took cared of his needs.
The food was delicious every day of the tour and made by a private chef just for us. In short the crew made sure to cover all our needs.
The whole experience made me fell in love of Peru and its culture. Everyone in my family was please and happy for the amount of details and care.

I would definitely repeat this tour. It exceed my expectations. I hope i can come back and hire KuskAndes Treck for another tour.

Machu Picchu alternative trek - Inka experience Americo went above and beyond to make our experience in Machu Picchu unforgettable! We arrived to Cusco in the middle of the strikes closing the main roads and whilst many tourists ended up trapped, Americo organised an alternative route to make our trip possible. Highly recommend him!

Trek to Machu Picchu Two summers ago my two girlfriends and I did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was simply the most magical experience of my life. This trek is not easy and the altitude is no joke. However, the accomplished feeling you receive when you finally catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu is unmatched and totally worth every mile climbed. We complete our trek with Terrias Vivas, and had some issues. But our guide, Americo, became like a best friend to us (it was only the three of us and the guide for our trip). I was so happy to hear that he recently opened his own trekking company because he is amazing! He is SO intelligent and can identify nearly every single flower, plant, bird, etc. that he sees. He has such a kind heart and I wish that everyone hiking the Andes had the opportunity to have him as their guide.
In conclusion, this tour is definitely worth it. Again, Americo is incredible and I walked away with not only photos of incredible views, increased knowledge of culture and history, and full bellies but I also gained a great friend in the process!
