Humantay Full Day Trek is considered one of the most visited natural attractions in recent years by domestic and foreign tourists where they are amazed by the contrast of bright colors of the lagoon that are in harmony and peace with the mountain of Humantay which is considered one of the apus of the Andean man of the Tawantinsuyo. This apu (God) is located at 5750 meters above sea level and within the Cordillera del Vilcabamba.

The Humantay Lagoon is one of the most visited natural attractions in Peru. The beauty of this destination makes it a favorite travel experience for many travelers from all over the world. The turquoise color of its waters accompanied by the imposing Salkantay snow-capped mountain makes this destination a unique tourist jewel.

Since Inca times, this lagoon was worshiped by the Andean communities. It is also considered the third most popular tourist attraction in Cusco, after Machu Picchu and the Seven Colors Mountain.

The snow-capped Salkantay is part of the Vilcabamba mountain range and gives rise to the formation of this incredible lagoon, which is fed by the glaciers of the mountain. This lagoon is located in the province of Anta, and represents a perfect alternative for those travelers who wish to enjoy nature and the landscape at the foot of a snow-capped mountain.

The road to the Humantay Lagoon begins in the town of Soraypampa, from there, you will undertake a walk of about an hour and a half. The hike to the natural site is not difficult, you just need to acclimatize yourself to the climate of the region. Itinerary Humantay Lake Full Day Trip

Day 1: Cusco - Soraypampa

We will pass by your respective hotel between 04:30 am to travel by transport for 2: 30 hrs to the district of Mollepata which is located within the province of Anta at 2,900 masl in the lush Apurimac River Valley, after a well-deserved breakfast to recharge energy we will continue our journey to Soraypampa (3,850 masl) after a brief warm-up before the hike we will continue to the Humantay Lagoon located at 4,150masl, finishing the visit of the lagoon we will begin to descend for 1 hour and 30 minutes approximately, along the way we can appreciate the wonderful nature of the Andes.

Then we return to the district of Mollepata for lunchtime to return to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains of the area and the valleys of the tropical zone of Limatambo on the way to imperial Cusco.

When to go to Humantay Lagoon? What is the weather like?

The climate in Humantay Lagoon is generally mild during the dry season (April to November) and rainy with cloudy skies from December to March. Temperatures normally range between 4 C° and 17 C°.
The best time to go is between May and November with sunnier days which allows a better reflection of the lagoon.

Which is better: to go on your own or to take a tour?

The lagoon can be reached on your own or through a tour (either private or group). If you are one of those travelers who prefer to go on your own and manage your own time or avoid the crowds, you can negotiate a fare with a cab that will take you there, wait for you to get in and out and take you back. Keep in mind that the trip to the start of the trek is approximately 3 hours and that’s where your price haggling skills come in.

Are vaccinations required to visit the Humantay Lagoon?

To visit the Humantay Lagoon it is not necessary to be vaccinated. If on the same trip you want to go to the Amazon jungle, you must be vaccinated against yellow fever.

What to do in the Humantay Lake?

Trekking: The only way to get to the beautiful lagoon is by foot, which is why it is a very popular destination for hiking enthusiasts. The hike is quite steep, almost 45 degrees and a bit slippery in some places. Some tourists prefer to go up with a mule but the descent on foot is mandatory. The start of the hike is at 3870 meters above sea level and you reach 4300 meters above sea level. The first 30 minutes of the hike is semi-flat and the rest is uphill with a steep slope, then winds through a rocky slope and finally descends to a small creek where the cold waters flow, just a few meters away, from the Humantay Lagoon. Because of the rocks on the road, the cold and the altitude, the hike takes an average of an hour and a half, which, depending on your physical condition, can be more or less time. Although it is a demanding hike, it is worth the whole journey and the reward upon reaching the lagoon will be worth it.

 Verified Best Tour I've ever had! Américo gave us the best tour we could ask for.We  were 6 peoples, went por 10 days. He made so interesting every place we went with all the history and knowledge that he shared, so it felt different and special his treatment  instead of just going, take the picture and go. Also, the experience in the Salkantay trail  it was magical and authentic as if we were the Andean man. I was a little bit worried for my 9 y/o son because the route is of high difficulty, but Américo and his crew were very helpful  that made it very easy and pleasent for my kid, they answered all his questions and took cared of his needs. 
The food  was delicious every day of the tour and made by a private chef just for us.  In short the crew made sure to cover all our needs. 
The whole experience made me fell in love of Peru and its culture. Everyone in my family was please and happy for the amount of details and care.

 Verified Trek to Machu Picchu Two summers ago my two girlfriends and I did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was simply the most magical experience of my life. This trek is not easy and the altitude is no joke. However, the accomplished feeling you receive when you finally catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu is unmatched and totally worth every mile climbed. We complete our trek with Terrias Vivas, and had some issues. But our guide, Americo, became like a best friend to us (it was only the three of us and the guide for our trip). I was so happy to hear that he recently opened his own trekking company because he is amazing! He is SO intelligent and can identify nearly every single flower, plant, bird, etc. that he sees. He has such a kind heart and I wish that everyone hiking the Andes had the opportunity to have him as their guide. 
In conclusion, this tour is definitely worth it. Again, Americo is incredible and I walked away with not only photos of incredible views, increased knowledge of culture and history, and full bellies but I also gained a great friend in the process!
