Travel Guide

History of Huchuy Qosqo

Huchuy Qosqo is located in a place where small human groups settled before the Incas. At the end of the 14th century, the Incas annexed this part of the Sacred Valley to their expanding territory. Then, the Inca Viracocha (also called Wiracocha) decided to build an urban enclosure that would serve as a palace for him and his family. It was then that he ordered the construction of Huchuy Qosqo, using materials such as stone and adobe.

At the beginning of the 15th century, Wiracocha chose Inca Urco as his successor. He was unable to make a good government. Before the threat of the invasion of the chancas (rivals of the Incas) to Cusco; Wiracocha and Inca Urco escape to Huchuy Qosqo. Then, the figure of Pachacutec, brother of Inca Urco, who managed to defeat the chancas and expand the empire, grows. Because of this, Pachacutec was named Inca emperor, achieving a great expansion of the empire that came to cover the current territories of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia and Argentina.

According to some chronicles, the body of Wiracocha was mummified in Huchuy Qosqo. After the invasion of the Spaniards in Cusco, at the beginning of the 16th century, they decided to burn the body and loot the place. It is believed that the ashes of the Inca were kept by his descendants. The walls and enclosures of the ancient city suffered severe damage over time. However, today it is possible to appreciate the foundations of the ancient palace of Wiracocha. Huchuy Qosqo is the name of the trekking route that leads to Machu Picchu, after 3 days and 2 nights.

The archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo

The archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo is made up of the remains of walls, enclosures, plazas, temples and water fountains. The passage of time has damaged many of its structures. However, today you can still appreciate the terraces for agricultural purposes arranged as walls. It also highlights an enclosure of up to three floors (the first two of stone and the last of adobe), whose function would have been the storage of food. It also highlights a kind of rectangular plaza of 40 to 50 meters long, which would have been called ‘Kallanka’ and would have served as a meeting center for important figures such as the Inca. The rest of the walls, aqueducts, platforms and enclosures are in a poor state of preservation. However, they give an idea of the real importance of this place, former hacienda of the Inca Wiracocha.

Huchuy Qosqo trekking route

The trekking route ‘Huchuy Qosqo trek’ lasts 3 days, 2 nights and only covers 18 kilometers, so it is considered one of the easiest hikes to reach Machupicchu. It can be done in the company of children or older adults.

Weather in Huchuy Qosqo

The climate in Huchuy Qosqo is cold temperate. The maximum temperature during the day can reach 22ºC (71.6ºF). At night, the cold can drop to 0ºC (32ºF). The rainiest months are January, February and March. On the other hand, the driest months are May, June, July and August.

Recommended time of year to go to Huchuy Qosqo

Best Tour I've ever had! Américo gave us the best tour we could ask for.We were 6 peoples, went por 10 days. He made so interesting every place we went with all the history and knowledge that he shared, so it felt different and special his treatment instead of just going, take the picture and go. Also, the experience in the Salkantay trail it was magical and authentic as if we were the Andean man. I was a little bit worried for my 9 y/o son because the route is of high difficulty, but Américo and his crew were very helpful that made it very easy and pleasent for my kid, they answered all his questions and took cared of his needs.
The food was delicious every day of the tour and made by a private chef just for us. In short the crew made sure to cover all our needs.
The whole experience made me fell in love of Peru and its culture. Everyone in my family was please and happy for the amount of details and care.

I would definitely repeat this tour. It exceed my expectations. I hope i can come back and hire KuskAndes Treck for another tour.

Machu Picchu alternative trek - Inka experience Americo went above and beyond to make our experience in Machu Picchu unforgettable! We arrived to Cusco in the middle of the strikes closing the main roads and whilst many tourists ended up trapped, Americo organised an alternative route to make our trip possible. Highly recommend him!

Trek to Machu Picchu Two summers ago my two girlfriends and I did the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. It was simply the most magical experience of my life. This trek is not easy and the altitude is no joke. However, the accomplished feeling you receive when you finally catch a glimpse of Machu Picchu is unmatched and totally worth every mile climbed. We complete our trek with Terrias Vivas, and had some issues. But our guide, Americo, became like a best friend to us (it was only the three of us and the guide for our trip). I was so happy to hear that he recently opened his own trekking company because he is amazing! He is SO intelligent and can identify nearly every single flower, plant, bird, etc. that he sees. He has such a kind heart and I wish that everyone hiking the Andes had the opportunity to have him as their guide.
In conclusion, this tour is definitely worth it. Again, Americo is incredible and I walked away with not only photos of incredible views, increased knowledge of culture and history, and full bellies but I also gained a great friend in the process!
